The Perfect Date (2019)

Movie Name/Year: The Perfect Date (2019)
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Length: 89 minutes
Rating: TV-14
Production Companies: Ace Entertainment, Awesomeness Films
Director: Chris Nelson
Writer: Steve Bloom, Randall Green
Actors: Noah Centineo, Laura Marano, Odiseas Georgiadis, Camila Mendes, Matt Walsh, Joe Chrest, Carrie Lazar, Alexander Biglane, Blaine Kern III, Zak Steiner, Ty Parker, Wayne Pére, Rhonda Johnson Dents, Maureen Brennan, Autumn Walker

Blurb from IMDb: To save up for college, Brooks Rattigan creates an app where anyone can pay him to play the perfect stand-in boyfriend for any occasion.

Selina’s Point of View:
I don’t really have much to say here.

Noah Centineo (T@gged, Swiped, Sierra Burgess is a Loser) has an incredible charisma, but that was really the only stand-out thing about The Perfect Date. It was pretty basic.

My only real thought about it even revolves around Centineo’s involvement. Really, I think he just needs to be careful about what parts he goes for. The parts I’ve seen him play in are all very similar. It would be a shame if he became type-cast. He’s supposed to be in the upcoming Charlie’s Angels (2019) and Masters of the Universe (as He-Man). If he does well there, it could break the curse before it really gets a chance to take hold.

Cat’s Point of View:
Noah Centineo (The Fosters, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, Swiped) is popping up all over the place lately – even unexpected places such as the forthcoming Masters of the Universe (2020) movie that’s currently in pre-production. Centineo as He-Man, however, is a discussion for another day.

When we recently reviewed To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018), I saw that this movie had just been released. For all that the main characters in The Perfect Date are easy on the eyes, I had a bit of a knee jerk reaction to sigh a bit at yet another teen romance. It’s fairly similar to She's All That (1999). There was just enough to make the film current and fun to watch, rather than experiencing a feature-length session of dejavu.

I did spend a little bit trying to pinpoint why Laura Marano (Superbad, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Lady Bird) was so familiar. Aside from the other works I knew I’d seen her in, I finally realized it was a random recollection from watching Austin & Ally (2011-2016) with my daughter in the days she kept Disney channel on all the time. I loved her character in this movie. Her brand of sass and assertiveness resonated with me. I also really enjoyed her dynamic with Centineo.

The Perfect Date was pretty much what I expected. I can’t say that it stands out in the sea of similar movies, but I don’t regret watching it.

Top 20 Movies to Look Out For In May (2019)

According to: Cat

20 – The Sun is Also a Star (5/17)

Tag Line: Love is a universe all of its own.
Production Companies: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros. Pictures, Alloy Entertainment
Director: Ry Russo-Young
Writers: Tracy Oliver, Nicola Yoon
Actors: Yara Shahidi, Charles Melton, Camrus Johnson, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Jake Choi, Cathy Shim, Anais Lee, Keong Sim
Genre: Romance, Drama
Rated: PG-13
Length: unknown

IMDb Blurb: A teenager finds love at a difficult time in her family's life.

With current events swirling around immigration and the like, this movie seems rather timely. I haven't read this book, but the trailer intrigued me. I was reminded a bit of Alanis Morissette's song "Ironic." Meeting someone on the eve of deportation has to really suck. I'd wager that this dramatic romance checks a lot of the boxes on the tropes you might expect; though, I have to admit I'm curious as to how they resolve the situation - if at all.

19 – The Perfection (5/24)

Tag Line: It's time to face the music.
Production Companies: Capstone Film Group, Netflix
Director: Richard Shepard
Writers: Eric C. Charmelo, Richard Shepard, Nicole Snyder
Actors: Allison Williams, Logan Browning, Steven Weber, Alaina Huffman
Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller
Rated: Unrated
Length: 90 minutes

IMDb Blurb: When troubled musical prodigy Charlotte (Allison Williams) seeks out Elizabeth (Logan Browning), the new star pupil of her former school, the encounter sends both musicians down a sinister path with shocking consequences.

Everything has its dark side. We’ve seen films and shows that explore that theme where you would least expect – such as ballet with Black Swan (2010). It appears that this is something along those lines, but focused on classical musicians in orchestra or chamber music. Who knew that something so stately and serene had a cutthroat side? While, of course, taking it to a horror movie level is a bit on the extreme end – I think it’s going to make a bonkers but entertaining story that will be worth the watch.

I am highly curious as to exactly wtf is actually going on in the events shown in the trailer. Is it hallucination? Is there a supernatural baddie lurking within the creepy-calm brunette? I’m glad this one’s on Netflix, so I can satisfy my curiosity without waiting in lines.

18 - Poms (5/10)

Tag Line: It's never too late to chase a dream.
Production Companies: Sierra/Affinity, Rose Pictures, Entertainment One, Mad As Birds
Director:  Zara Hayes
Writers: Shane Atkinson, Zara Hayes
Actors: Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver, Pam Grier, Celia Weston, Rhea Perlman, Phyllis Somerville, Charlie Tahan, Bruce McGill
Genre: Comedy
Rated: PG-13
Length: 91 minutes

Moviefone Blurb: A woman moves into a retirement community and starts a cheerleading squad with her fellow residents.

This movie makes the list this month because it just looks like a lot of fun. Sure, the whole 'chase your dreams, regardless of age' theme is sweet and meaningful - but that's a secondary element. I like that there seems to be a dark comedy element to this, as well, as alluded to with Rhea Perlman's (The Sessions, Sing, Half Magic) part in the trailer.

There's a really good balance of both heavy and light productions hitting the screens this month, and this appears to be a great example of the latter.

17 - Dead Trigger (5/3)

Tag Line: Based on the hit first-person shooter game.
Production Companies: Aldamisa Entertainment, Badhouse Studios Mexico, Distant Shore Films, Madfinger Games, Tadross Media Group
Directors: Mike Cuff, Scott Windhauser
Writers: Heinz Treschnitzer, Mike Cuff, Scott Windhauser, Madfinger Games
Actors: Dolph Lundgren, Autumn Reeser, Romeo, Isaiah Washington, Chris Galya, Oleg Taktarov, Luciana Carro, Justin Chon
Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Rated: R
Length: 91 minutes

Moviefone Blurb: In the near future, a deadly virus has killed billions and turned many others into bloodthirsty zombies. Unable to stop the spread of the virus, the government recruits an elite team to combat the zombie menace.

Do I really need to go in-depth on this one? It's Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables, Arrow, Creed II) vs, zombies. Done. Shut up and take my money.

16 - UglyDolls (5/3)

Tag Line: Perfection Can Stuff It
Production Companies: MWM, Troublemaker Studios, STX Entertainment, Reel FX Animation Studios, Alibaba Pictures, Huaxia Film
Director: Kelly Asbury
Writers: David Horvath, Sun-min Kim, Alison Peck, Erica Rivinoja, Vivian Wang
Actors: Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Blake Shelton, Janelle Monae, Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Leehom Wang, Pitbull,   Charli XCX, Bebe Rexha
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Musical
Rated: PG
Length: 87 minutes

IMDb Blurb: An animated adventure in which the free-spirited UglyDolls confront what it means to be different, struggle with a desire to be loved, and ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most.

I've been watching this season of The Voice (2011-), and man has that network been playing this trailer on rotation hard. It makes sense, considering 2 of the show's judges are among the all-star ensemble cast of musical powerhouses. Seriously, Kelly Clarkson (American Idol, Reba, The Star) and Blake Shelton (Pitch Perfect 2, The Ridiculous 6, The Angry Birds Movie) are only 2 among many stellar performers.

Aside from that, the film looks cute, fun, and it's got a good message. With the R and PG-13 heavy batch of movies out this month; this looks like a great option for younger audiences.

15 - The Professor and the Madman (5/10)

Tag Line: The Incredible True Story That Defined Our World.
Production Companies: Icon Entertainment International, Fastnet Films, Voltage Pictures, 22h22, Caviar Antwerp NV, Definition Films, Zik Zak Filmworks
Director: Farhad Safinia
Writers: John Boorman, Todd Komarnicki, Farhad Safinia, Simon Winchester
Actors: Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Natalie Dormer, Jennifer Ehle, Jeremy Irvine, Ioan Gruffudd, Adam Fergus, Aidan McArdle
Genre: Biography, Drama, Mystery
Rated: Unrated
Length: 124 minutes

IMDb Blurb: Professor James Murray begins work compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid 19th century, and receives over 10,000 entries from a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr. William Minor.

It's really a shame that there have been some legal woes for this particular production that have impacted its promotion. I am afraid it's not going to get the publicity that it deserves for it to get a fair shot at the box office.

We often comment that we'd watch some of our favorite actors reading a dictionary -- well this movie is about how the first Oxford Dictionary was actually made. Throw some drama into the biopic and this looks like a really solid movie that will be a lot more interesting than our lighthearted fan-girling example would actually be.

14 - Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (5/3)

Tag Line: The Story Behind America's Most Notorious Serial Killer
Production Companies: COTA Films, Ninjas Runnin' Wild Productions, Voltage Pictures
Director: Joe Berlinger
Writers: Elizabeth Kendall, Michael Werwie
Actors:  Zac Efron, Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, Jim Parsons, Angela Sarafyan, James Hetfield
Genre: Biography, Crime, Drama
Rated: R
Length: 110 minutes

IMDb Blurb: A chronicle of the crimes of Ted Bundy, from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, who refused to believe the truth about him for years.

I had to do a bit of a double-take when I watched this trailer. Zac Efron's (We Are Your Friends, Baywatch, The Disaster Artist) transformation to take on the role of serial killer Ted Bundy is eerie. This is definitely not the film he's had his bleach-blonde-on-top look for lately.

Bundy is apparently the hot topic of the moment, or maybe it's serial killers in general considering there's a movie revolving around Manson this month as well. (I just didn't have room on my list for both.) Netflix is also sporting a program involving Bundy - but that's more on the documentary side featuring recordings of the killer's own admissions. This, however, is a dramatization focusing on the smokescreen sociopathic Bundy had with being a 'family man.' I think it's an interesting lens to view the story through.

13 - Long Shot (5/3)

Tag Line: Unlikely but not impossible
Production Companies: Good Universe, Lionsgate, Entertainment One, Denver and Delilah Productions, Point Grey Pictures
Director: Jonathan Levine
Writers: Dan Sterling, Liz Hannah
Actors: Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, June Diane Raphael, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ravi Patel, Bob Odenkirk, Andy Serkis, Randall Park
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Rated: R
Length: 125 minutes

IMDb Blurb: When Fred Flarsky reunites with his first crush, one of the most influential women in the world, Charlotte Field, he charms her. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly.

With the 2020 Presidential race firing up, this movie is rather timely to offer some levity to give us a break from the political 3-ring-circus. I can't say that I expect this to deviate too far from the typical unlikely pairing rom-com recipe, but it certainly looks entertaining.

12 - Booksmart (5/24)

Tag Line: Getting Straight A's. Giving Zero F's.
Production Companies: Annapurna Pictures, Gloria Sanchez Productions, Entertainment One
Director: Olivia Wilde
Writers: Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Katie Silberman
Actors: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams, Jason Sudeikis, Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, Victoria Ruesga, Mason Gooding
Genre: Comedy
Rated: R
Length: 102 minutes

IMDb Blurb: On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.

There's really something to that phrase 'all work and no play makes [Jack or Jill] a dull [insert your gender descriptor of choice].' Those that have a restricted youth, at least in my experiences, tend to hit a point where the switch gets flipped and rebellious mayhem can occur to make up for everything 'missed out' on. I know I experienced that to some degree, myself -- not quite to the extent in this movie, though. It definitely makes this film relatable, though!

In any case, this movie should offer some good laughs - and it's well timed with the end of the school year (for most).

11 - Rocketman (5/31)

Tag Line: The Only Way to Tell His Story is to live His Fantasy.
Production Companies:  Endurance Media, Paramount Pictures, Rocket Pictures, Marv Films,  Marv Studios, New Republic Pictures, Pixoloid Studios
Director: Dexter Fletcher
Writer: Lee Hall
Actors:  Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Gemma Jones, Bryce Dallas Howard
Genre: Musical , Biography , Drama
Rated: unrated
Length: 121 minutes

IMDb Blurb: A musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.

There is no question that Sir Elton John is a masterful performer. I also love that he has a great sense of humor - consider his cameos. There have been few biopics that have tried to tackle his story, though. I sincerely hope that this one does him justice.

From the previews I've seen, I think this movie has a good shot. Taron Egerton (Eddie the Eagle, Sing, Robin Hood) looks amazing in this role portraying Sir Elton. This isn't the first time that Egerton has crossed paths with the living legend, though, considering both were in Kingsmen: The Golden Circle (2017). Coincidence? Perhaps. Fate? Who knows! I just hope that this film lives up to expectations.

10 - Aladdin (5/24)

Tag Line: The magic comes to life
Production Companies: Rideback, Walt Disney Pictures, Lin Pictures, Marc Platt Productions
Director: Guy Ritchie
Writers: John August, Guy Ritchie
Actors: Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, Numan Acar, Alan Tudyk
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Family
Rated: PG
Length: 129 minutes

IMDb Blurb: A kindhearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.

I was torn as to where to place this movie on the list. I both really want to watch it, and also am not sure. I hear the cries from the 'verse. Will Smith (I Am Legend, Suicide Squad, Bright) is decidedly not Robin Williams (August Rush, Old Dogs, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb). I agree wholeheartedly.

I know there's no 'replacement' for Williams in the role of the Genie - that part was always meant for him. He did so much improvisation to bring his animated character to life. If you'd seen any of his talk-show interviews and the like you know that the Genie was so much a representation of HIM. It hurts to see anyone else take on the part.

However... I also want to give this a chance. I've enjoyed the live-action adaptations so far. I think there's so much that can be explored with them, if done correctly. Smith has the comedic ability. He began his career as a wise-cracking funny-guy on a sit-com, right? His 'brand' of comedy is just different. If they've taken care, and Smith's version of the Genie is his own flavor of comedy rather than trying to emulate Williams, then I say fair play. It's possible the story as a whole won't be damaged by it. So far the trailers seem to point in the direction of that better outcome.

Why not give it a shot? Besides, the film is going to be a visual treat. There'll be a little something there for everyone.

9 - All is True (5/10)

Tag Line: In 1613 William Shakespeare Retired. He Still Had One Last Story To Tell - His Own.
Production Company: TKBC
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Writer: Ben Elton
Actors: Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Lydia Wilson, Hadley Fraser, Jack Colgrave Hirst, John Dagleish, Sean Foley, Ian McKellen
Genre: Historical Drama
Rated: PG-13
Length: 101 minutes

IMDb Blurb: A look at the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare.

I’m rather excited about this movie. Why, you ask? My answer, as such is my usual, is: the cast. Of course, the subject matter of The Bard, himself, William Shakespeare is a good reason but when you have British powerhouses Sir Kenneth Branagh (Valkyrie, Dunkirk, Murder on the Orient Express), Dame Judi Dench (Skyfall, Victoria & Abdul, Red Joan), and Sir Ian McKellen (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Mr. Holmes, Beauty and the Beast) involved, you know the production is going to have considerable quality – at least with their performances.

Branagh is also well known both directing and starring in Shakespeare’s works framed for the cinematic experience. Whether he’s behind the camera as a director (as with this film), or leading the cast (at the very least with a pivotal role); Branagh has at least 6 productions of direct interpretations. These span from his title role in Henry V (1989) all the way to The Scottish Play (aka Macbeth) (2013). He knows his way around the material.

I like that this movie takes place after the final curtain has fallen, and Shakespeare has retired. I find the window into that later portion of his life to be absolutely fascinating, and I hope audiences will too.

8 - The Intruder (5/3)

Tag Line: Your House. His Home.
Production Companies: Screen Gems, Hidden Empire Film Group, Primary Wave Entertainment
Director: Deon Taylor
Writer: David Loughery
Actors: Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, Joseph Sikora, Dennis Quaid, Alvina August, Carolyn Anderson
Genre: Thriller
Rated: PG-13
Length: 102 minutes

IMDb Blurb: A young married couple buy a beautiful house on several acres of land only to find out that the man they bought it from refuses to let go of the property.

This movie, right here, is a very good reason that people should change their locks and alarm codes the minute they close on a new home purchase. Just saying.

The trailer for this film just filled me with a crawling uneasy feeling. I’m hoping that the production lives up to it throughout and that the preview wasn’t all the best parts. There’s nothing like the rush of a climactic moment after a good build-up of suspense. It looks like there should be plenty of that to go around.

Meagan Good (The Unborn, Think Like a Man, Deuces) and Michael Ealy (Takers, About Last Night, The Following) seem to have really good chemistry together. They’ve worked together on productions in the past, as well. I’m glad to see him on the protagonist side of the fence this time. The last couple things I’ve seen him in, he was decidedly not. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch The Perfect Guy (2015). His performance there is chilling.

This time around, the dubious distinction of antagonist goes to Dennis Quaid (Beneath the Darkness, Movie 43, The Pretenders). I’ve always found his smile so warm and friendly – until the trailer for this movie. I just wanted to back away from the TV and that creepy-as-hell expression.

7 - Tolkien (5/10)

Tag Line: A Life of Love, Courage, and Fellowship
Production Companies: Fox Searchlight Pictures, Chernin Entertainment
Director: Dome Karukoski
Writers: Fox Searchlight Pictures, Chernin Entertainment
Actors: Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly
Genre: Biography, Historical Drama
Rated: PG-13
Length: 112 minutes

IMDb Blurb: Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school.

I’ve long been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. Some of my fondest early memories are of sitting next to the record player with the record jacket read-along-book while I listened to The Hobbit (1977). I haven’t read a lot…well much at all…of any of the biographical works about him; so I’m rather curious about his own personal story. I’m hoping that this biopic is as interesting as I’m hoping it will be. When taking into consideration the cast, though, it likely will.

If the box office numbers for all of the movies set in Middle Earth over the last decade or so are any indication, the world loves his work, too. I’m hoping that will also reflect in the box office for this movie – but there’s still a lot of stiff competition out there from major titles that released in April.

6 - The Hustle (5/10)

Tag Line: They're giving Dirty Rotten Men a run for their Money.
Production Companies: Les Films Séville, Cave 76, Camp Sugar, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Pin High Productions
Director: Chris Addison
Writers: Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, Jac Schaeffer
Actors: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Dean Norris, Ingrid Oliver
Genre: Comedy
Rated: PG-13
Length: 103 minutes

IMDb Blurb: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.

This is a movie with a strong female lead cast and looks absolutely hilarious. Do you really need another reason to give this one a shot? I know I don't!

5 - Ma (5/31)

Tag Line: Get Home Safe
Production Companies: Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, Wyolah Films
Director: Tate Taylor
Writer: Scotty Landes
Actors: Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Luke Evans, McKaley Miller, Missi Pyle, Corey Fogelmanis, Gianni Paolo
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Rated: R
Length: unknown

IMDb Blurb: A lonely woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. Just when the kids think their luck couldn't get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host.

The next few movies have been fighting for their positions on this list in my mind. I finally had to tell myself that I just had to leave the order alone and just go with it. I’m on pins and needles to see them all.

I’ve long admired the work of Octavia Spencer (Zootopia, Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water). The roles I’ve seen her in so far are generally kind, helpful, and generous characters. Her role here underscores that whole life lesson of ‘stranger danger’ that we try to instill in our kids when they’re young. I can’t wait to see cray cray Octavia. This month’s movies are full of cautionary tales, aren’t they. This is one I’m definitely not going to miss.

4 - Brightburn (5/24)

Tag Line: Imagine What He Could Become
Production Companies: Screen Gems, Cliffbrook Films, The H Collective
Director: David Yarovesky
Writers: Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn
Actors: Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt L. Jones, Meredith Hagner, Jennifer Holland, Becky Wahlstrom, Steve Agee
Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller
Rated: R
Length: 90 minutes

IMDb Blurb: What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?

While the DC Cinematic Universe is still trying to really find its feet with their movie interpretations; the generally panned Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) did pose an important question. What would happen if the superhero wasn’t heroic? With all that power, what would such a being with a dark heart wreak upon the world? This movie seems to be an answer to that. I find it fascinating and exciting that they turned the tale of an alien orphan on its ear. I’m hoping that it lives up to the anticipation following the eerie trailers.

3 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (5/31)

Tag Line: One King To Rule Them All
Production Companies: Disruption Entertainment, Warner Bros., Warner Bros. Pictures, Toho Company Ltd., Legendary Entertainment
Director: Michael Dougherty
Writers: Max Borenstein, Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields
Actors: Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, Ken Watanabe
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Rated: PG-13
Length: 132 minutes

IMDb Blurb: The crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

Go Go Godzilla! I can't help but love the big lizard, whether animated, old-school, or otherwise. I'm also super excited that we get to see multiple kaiju opponents for the big guy at once. The effects used for them, as seen in the trailers, are just phenomenal. I really like the cast, as well. Can Godzilla stand up to 3 of his nemeses at once? I want to find out!

2 - Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (5/10)

Tag Line: None
Production Companies: Toho Company Ltd., Legendary Entertainment
Director: Rob Letterman
Writers: Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, Rob Letterman, Derek Connolly, Satoshi Tajiri, Nicole Perlman, Ken Sugimori, Junichi Masuda, Atsuko Nishida, Tomokazu Ohara, Haruka Utsui
Actors: Ryan Reynolds, Justice Jesse Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Bill Nighy, Rita Ora
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy,
Rated: PG
Length: 104 minutes

IMDb Blurb: In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.

Out of this top 5 that I am practically chomping at the bit to see, this is the one I'm actually going to be able to attend first. My local Pokemon Go community is attending an early showing just before the wide release. Pika-pool jokes aside, I am excited to see the 'real world' versions of these (mostly) adorable pocket monsters. I have a feeling I'm going to be tipping my head and either grimacing or some other exclamation at a few of the renderings - but hey, can't please everyone, right?

The trailers have been pretty great at grabbing my attention. I'm hoping that they have done justice to the beloved Pokemon genre. At the very least this is going to be a fun family outing.

1 - John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (5/17)

Tag Line: Tick Tock, Mr. Wick
Production Companies: Lionsgate, Thunder Road Pictures, Les Films Séville, Entertainment One
Director: Chad Stahelski
Writers: Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, Marc Abrams
Actors:  Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane
Genre: Action, Thriller
Rated: R
Length: 130 minutes

IMDb Blurb: Super-assassin John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin's guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head - he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.

The second installment of the John Wick (2014) trilogy left on such a cliffhanger that it's been hard to wait for this final installment of the story. I love the underworld setting that the films are based in, and Keanu Reeves (To the Bone, Destination Wedding, Replicas) is simply a badass. From all indications, this seems to be a satisfying ending chapter for the story of this unparalleled assassin.
