“This Week in Crowdfunding” will be posted again on 2/4/2017. I would have started it up again this week, but I thought it was important to acknowledge, and offer tribute to, all those who passed away in 2016. The original plan was to spend only one week on the memorial article, but too many people died last year. It will take four weeks instead, even after whittling the list down. There were so many, that I realized I couldn’t spend time on all of them without nixing the crowdfunding article altogether, and I don’t want to do that.
On that note, I’ve seen a lot of hate on social media guilt tripping people for mourning the celebrities that died last year. I find that absolutely shameful. Are their hearts so small that they can only mourn one person at a time? Just because we, as fans, mourn the loss of Rickman or Fisher doesn’t mean we can’t also mourn the people who were killed by violence and terrorism. It doesn’t mean that we can’t mourn our friends and family either. It just adds to the sad, it doesn’t take away from other sources of sad.
More than once I’ve explained why entertainment is so important to me. At times in my life, entertainment was the only thing I felt connected to. As a result, there are actors and directors that I would absolutely be devastated to hear something bad happened to. That does not mean that I have not mourned my grandmother’s loss. It does not mean I have not mourned the lost souls in Aleppo. It means I also mourn other people.
If you’re one of those people that has a heart so small that only one person can be mourned at a time, I feel so incredibly sorry for you. If you’re one of those people that understand mourning one person does not take away from the mourning of another – I urge you to ignore anyone that tries to make you feel guilty for the way you feel.
The death of any good man is no more important than the death of any other good man. That means Muhammed Ali’s death is no more important than anyone who died in the Orlando shooting, but it also means no death there was more important than his. The pendulum swings both ways.
So don’t be a dick.
In the end, Trust the Dice is an entertainment blog. For the sake of making this tribute a manageable length, we are defining people in entertainment as those who are listed on IMDb and have over twenty credits (not including “self” credits) – with very few exception. I had to add the “number of credits” requirement when I found out that Antonin Scalia had an IMDb page. (Not saying he doesn’t deserve to be remembered, but he was certainly not an entertainer.)
That said, this is not a countdown or a review.
To make this a countdown or a review of the people listed, I feel, would be cheapening the memories of those that were lost. To keep from any appearance of favoritism, this tribute is simply in alphabetical order by first name. If I left anyone out, feel free to add them in the comments.
This is going to become an annual piece to be posted on the first Sunday of the year, and continuing on each consecutive Sunday until the list is complete.
